Dynamics of Desire: An Exploration into the Spectator’s Desire for Speed in the Fast and the Furious Series

Abstract

This paper explores the psychological trajectories experienced by the
audience of action movies filled with thrill and speed- induced vehicle races. In
the background of the Fast and the Furious Series, the paper argues, using the
concepts of symbolic castration, external mediation, mimetic crisis and
metaphysical desire, that the euphoria and the adoration of the audience for the
characters and their attempt to identify with the characters soon give way to a
grudge towards the characters, ending up with the transformation of the
audience to violence and ultimately to a total feeling of nothingness.
